George II mahogany armchair with needlepoint covering circa 1765.
A superb George III mahogany open armchair with upholstered seat and back, having outward scrolled arms, blind fret carved legs and an open fretwork stretcher, supported on casters. The needlepoint is French, 18th century.
The potpourri of styles that can be
found on this chair include "Gothick", rococo and chinoiserie and even,
in the square tapered legs, a touch of the neoclassical. Without the
tapering of the legs, it would be better to date this chair ten years
earlier which is still a possibility. However, it is almost possible
that some chairmaker was asked to see if he could incorporate all these
styles in one chair which he has with the rococo cabochons on the arms,
the Gothick tracery on the arms and the chinoiserie of the blind carved
triangles at the top of the legs.
